Tapir Studio (Klang)
Tapir Studio is an art collective based in Klang, Malaysia, with a mission to examine everyday rituals, public spaces, and communal behaviour through material and participatory forms. The collective works across installation, performance, film, and socially engaged practice.
Its practice often begins with familiar social rituals and experiences, transforming them into shared environments that invite physical and social interaction. Recent projects include Ruang Antara Mimpi (KL Festival, 2026), Tidur Lambak (Lingkaran Ipoh, 2026), Tidur Lambak and Tidur Sore (Djakarta International Theater Platform, 2025), Katil bersama (KL Design Festival, 2023), and Tidur Lambak (Kongsi KL, 2023).
Proposal
Tidur Lambak is a participatory installation that reimagines the communal sleeping arrangements of balik kampung, or Malaysian homecoming tradition. Centred on a long communal pillow that twists and extends through the space, it is marked by silhouettes of heads, each representing a different member of an extended family: sister(kakak), father(abah), cousin(sepupu), older aunt(mak long), grandmother(nenek), and others. Participants occupy these positions, collectively navigating the shared structure. As each person moves, the pillow responds through a continuous series of tugs, pulls, and adjustments, altering the space for everyone else. The work examines family dynamics, interdependence, hierarchy, compromise, and the relational negotiations inherent in moving through a collective.
Installation running permanently throughout the duration of the fair (Polar & Tropic) with live music on;
