BEYOND THE MARKET: Tokyo Seoul
Participants: INGAHEE (Seoul) and Matter (Tokyo) | Moderated by Laura Peh
Following the path opened by Focus Tokyo-Seoul last year—a program that allowed us to place the resonances and tensions between both scenes in parallel—this roundtable seeks to delve into how the economic and cultural conditions of each context shape their artistic landscapes today.
In Seoul, the dynamism of a rapidly expanding market positions the scene under the banner of commerciality, while simultaneously raising questions about the spaces available for experimentation and risk. Tokyo, on the other hand, after having played for decades the role of a major capitalist power in Asia and the world, now seems to be moving toward a terrain where the non-commercial can once again find room: independent initiatives, conceptual explorations, and practices that overflow institutional frameworks.
The conversation aims to reflect on these divergent scenes and temporalities and explore how they manifest in modes of creation, circulation, and critique in both cities.
