OFF-SITE

OFF-Site is Swab Barcelona’s new programme dedicated to independent art spaces that emerge through reuse, adaptation, and necessity. Its point of departure is the reactivation and re-signification of unconventional environments—often overlooked, residual, or disused—transforming them into places for artistic production, exhibition, and encounter.

OFF-Site responds to the growing spatial pressures affecting contemporary cities by prioritising the reuse of existing and underutilised structures. This approach reduces environmental impact while reflecting the real social and economic conditions in which culture operates today, including the scarcity of available urban space. Rather than expanding into new infrastructures, the programme embraces adaptation as both an ecological and cultural strategy.

From this perspective, OFF-Site challenges conventional exhibition models and proposes more flexible, context-sensitive, and intimate approaches to artistic practice. It seeks to understand and make visible how these alternative spaces—far removed from the traditional white cube—activate new relationships between site-specificity, architecture, and an expanded understanding of art and its environment.

The programme foregrounds narratives that not only emerge from the margins of the art system but actively challenge the stories produced and legitimised by its centres. It asks how spaces operating beyond hegemonic cultural circuits articulate alternative ways of inhabiting the periphery, connecting with experiences, practices, and discourses that exist outside the capitalist concentration of the art world and its mechanisms of validation.

Exploring new spaces for contemporary art is, above all, an invitation to create new relationships. Every wall becomes a membrane, absorbing the context that surrounds it and inviting dialogue with the environment in which it exists.

The galleries participating in this edition share an interest in encounters between apparent opposites: the intimate and the public, the material and the immaterial, the bodily and the architectural. Through these productive frictions, they construct narratives that challenge the rigid boundaries of contemporary society. What is often perceived as the opposite of the contemporary city—spaces defined by structural limitations and marginality—appears here as an open, adaptable territory shaped by its own context.

Through reuse and adaptation, independent spaces become laboratories for new cultural models: lighter, more ethical, and more deeply rooted in their communities. OFF-Site is founded on the belief that the future of cultural spaces lies less in expansion than in the capacity to adapt, strengthen relationships, and discover new possibilities within what is already available.

This approach enables artistic activity to unfold across multiple contexts, expanding access and participation beyond established institutional circuits. OFF-Site ultimately seeks to reach new audiences while building meaningful relationships with the communities that inhabit and give meaning to each activated space.

Across this edition of OFF-Site, the participating galleries converge around a series of shared concerns that transcend their diverse artistic languages and geographical contexts. Their projects offer distinct readings of the city and its transformations while maintaining sustained attention to embodiment, intimacy, and community as sites of meaning, negotiation, and resistance.

Collectively, these practices reflect upon identities that escape normative structures and modes of inhabiting space that challenge both traditional models of cultural infrastructure and the extractive capitalist logic shaping contemporary society. In doing so, OFF-Site reaffirms its conviction that the future of cultural spaces depends less on accumulation than on adaptation: finding new beginnings within what is residual and sustaining cultural practice through collective forms of coexistence.
