How do we mourn the death of the old institutions, toward new forms of relating within the art ecosystem? For this year's Swab talks, we want to produce a space where we think and act togehter when emerge new forms of solidarity.

There is no single center here, and we do not want one. We would rather scatter the centers, the senses with them, and what counts as valuable, as beautiful, as fair, until justice and equity are practised in many places at once, each with its own way of holding things up. As Suhail Malik reminded us, art is organized and constituted by circulatory and distributional conditions and circuits, not by the productivist requirement that it be made for its own sake. Art is coequally discursive and networked.

Much of what structures the present up was laid by empires, and is renewed each season in who has access to mobility, income, and recognition. We do not think better art can undo that from inside a market. Singing togehter, rethinking property, belonging and relations from artisitc practices have always experiment nouvel forms of togetherness that are al social relation and mode of production. What infrastructures can we imagine in times of aesthetical, institutionial and relational renewal?

We strive for dissent to stay in the room as a working tension that runs across roles, across collectives, and across the methods we borrow from art itself.

Over the past years we have seen a reactionary response to the early 2000s identitarian politics in the west. These standpoints are not only present among those who have opposed such politics, but also within the left, which is losing faith in the changes negotiated within Neoliberalism. In this conversation, we will look at how artistic practitioners deal with politics that have heavily relied on body politics and their experiences in relation to institutional collaborations. We will discuss where identity politics have been useful and the shortcomings it has presented. This conversation will derive from a queer perspective, looking into topics of appropriation, intersectionality, desire and instrumentalism. Finally, we will dive into our prospects for the coming time and, if not identity politics, then what?

Solidarity isn't proportional to distance. The talk brings together independent collectives and spaces from the local scene, from the Nordic region, and from Southeast Asia, places separated by real geography that still build networks of collaboration across them. At a moment when borders are hardening rather than opening, the talk asks how these moments and forms of togetherness end up strengthening networks of collaboration and artistic friendship instead. That distance closes fastest around a table, shared meals, shared housing, shared land, all point to value produced through people cooking for each other and tending the same plot. The talk asks what happens when those practices enter a fair, and how they form transnational solidarity and networks of collaboration.

This conversation is part of Polar and Tropic, Swab's curated program connecting artistic scenes from Northern Europe and the Southeast Pacific.

As fascism rises too many art institutions continue to silence those speaking up against the genocide, cultural workers are having to build their own structures of solidarity and resistance from the ground up. This talk asks directly: how are these structures being formed within, outside and against complicit art institutions, what does organizing under this pressure actually look like, and what makes solidarity durable rather than symbolic?

Where does a gallery actually begin? This conversation asks how newness gets formed. A first exhibition does more than introduce artists, it sets a tone, challenges vocabularies, weaves people and places together, and forms the origin of a relationship with institutional logics that will keep shaping the space long after that first show closes. How are galleries actually dealing with these early relationships, and what does it take to make cultural production possible beyond extractive markets?

Local Ecosystems as Artistic Gestures

This discussion addresses the spatial practice of art and cultural institutions embedded within their own contexts. This spatial practice reflects, and acts on their material, historical and social curatorial methods. The discussion opens on the sustainability of (new) spaces in terms of collaborative processes; how the cultural spaces can contribute to or join in local ecosystems as artistic gesture, how artistic practice can inform and learn from local communities as common survival strategies and how the relation to implied temporalities can be negociated within. In other words, can artistic & cultural practice finally detach from the managerial project structure of the "fixed objective, within a limited time and budget" to find (trans)form in an open, collaborative and shared ressources in the making process?

Following the discussion on spatial practices in relation to their contexts (at large), this panel talk confronts the burning questions of borders, territories and immigration in Latin America. Drawing on Doreen Massey, a departing point could relate to the difference and relation between space and place. In her essay A global sense of place, Massey argue that in a capitalist world, borders dont only stop but filter people based on their class, gender or race. Borders are site of mobility that reinforce power structures. The discussion develops on how artistic practice can resist this colonial, oppressing logic by proposing a place as situated knowledge, a set of particular relation embedded within a global space of constant flow of goods, capital and people.
