FOC
FOC (Barcelona)
Foc is a shared space bringing together several initiatives: Colectivo Jokkoo, c h o r o, Canino FM, Fondo, and Cordova. Each operates either as a non-profit cultural association or as a company. They regularly collaborate with local and international collectives, either through direct collaborations or by making the space available for presentations and activities within the local context.
Their practices are closely connected to pedagogical processes applied to education, performance and stage-based practices, club culture, exhibition spaces, spatial and architectural practices, and cultural activism. In 2023, Foc was awarded the Barcelona City Award.
Proposal
How are artist-run spaces sustained in the city of Barcelona? How do government policies affect the practice of experimentation and cultural activism? For this edition of SWAB, Foc offers an insight into the practices and forms of collective support that sustain artistic work.
As a space independent from the municipal and Generalitat subsidy networks, Foc operates as a collective entity that relies on the individual work of the collectives and artists involved in the space. Its sustainability is rooted in their relationships with institutions, international exchanges, and the exploration of internal economies.
For its booth, Foc proposes a wall installation featuring an edition of T-shirts created by the community of artists involved in the space. Presented for the first time, the T-shirt edition brings together designs by artists from the projects associated with Foc: Jokkoo, Cordova, choro, Fondo, and Canino FM.
Over the course of the fair, a background image initially concealed by the T-shirts will gradually be revealed as the shirts are progressively removed from the wall.
