In Bahasa Indonesia, pulang inherently means “going home,” yet the meaning of home is increasingly complex in a world shaped by migration and displacement. Taking jalan pulang (“the way home” or “walking home”) as its starting point, this showcase focuses not on the destination but on the journey of returning—to a place, a feeling, or a sense of belonging. Through themes of sunlight (Vicky Saputra), rice fields (Gilang Mustofa), and wooden sanctuary (Kurt D. Peterson), the artworks suggests that home may be found in our connection to the natural world.

Vicky Saputra

Vicky Saputra was born in 1996 in Bandung and grew up on Bangka Island. He currently works and lives in Yogyakarta. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication Design in 2018. He has been actively creating and exhibiting his work since early 2016. He spentfive years focusing on watercolor painting on paper, and another five years working with acrylic and mixed media on canvas. More recently, he has become interested in using the sun as a material in his painting practice, which he calls the “Sunstroke Series,” since undertaking a residency in 2024. For Vicky, using the sun as a material can spark new ways of thinking, enrich the diversity of materials in painting, and offer a distinctive visual quality through the traces of sunburn. Vicky likes to use metaphors drawn from physical events or phenomena to express occurrences within the inner self, within an existentialistframework.

Gilang Mustofa

Gilang Mustofa (b. 1997, Indonesia) is an visual artist based in Bandung. He obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Indonesian Institute of Art and Culture Bandung in 2021. His artistic practice often stems from an interest in the narratives of
local and marginalized communities particularly those involving alternative food systems, rituals, and the relationship between humans and nature.

He observes that local communities are frequently positioned as those left behind, such as farmers marginalized by the fast-paced, centralized modern food industry. For Gilang,
these narratives are essential to reinterpret, as they offer a space for reflecting on our current way of life, one that is often detached from its roots and natural surroundings.

Gilang works across various mediums including installation, drawing, and video, choosing the one most relevant to the context of the issue he wants to explore. Through his works, he aims to create a space for dialogue, shed light on the marginalized, and prompt reflection on the increasingly rapid tempo of our everyday lives.

Kurt D. Peterson

Originally from the Midwest farm state of Nebraska, USA (b. 1982), and based in Indonesia since 2017, Kurt D. Peterson is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice moves fluidly among writing, drawing, woodworking, sound and performance. He considers each medium an essential part of a holistic practice, a tool set for discovery, reflection and expression of both internal and external realities. Peterson often uses the term “contemporary folk” to refer to his work. Materially, this means working with mediums that feel grounded and accessible. Conceptually, it means drawing upon mythology, religion, magic, memory and perception, as through a simplified poetics, he seeks to reveal the present moment and its meaning within the greater arc of particular histories.

In addition to his own artistic practice, Peterson is co-founder of Rumah Tangga, an artist-run creative space and residency program in Depok, West Java. Through the lens of “Land Literacy”, Rumah Tangga invites both local and international artists to develop works centered intimately around nature, home, community and self-reflection.
